In Australia, Destinations, Vineyards

If you happen to be in Perth you don’t want to miss out on the Margaret River Wine tasting, just 2.5 hours away. This is a place where gourmet cuisine and premium wines meet Australia’s most beautiful beaches and forests. The world renowned Margaret River Wine region has dry and lean soil which is the perfect balance for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay grape. This premier wine region has over 200 vineyards. You don’t have a year to try them all? No worries, I selected the 8 best vineyards for Margaret River wine tasting which you can visit in just a day or two!

+ Margaret River wine tasting – Amelia Park Wines

This winery is a must visit due to its marvelous setting. When entering the cellar door of Amelia Park the excitement just grabs you! The stylish entrance into the actual tasting room is phenomenal, which is why Amelia Park is named as the ‘star’ cellar door, not to mention the stunning views over the Wilyabrup Valley which make you’re tasting experience even more enjoyable.

+ Margaret River wine tasting – Aravina Estate

Another eye catcher is Aravina Estate. This winery has superb views over the perfectly manicured gardens, lake and vineyards. I fell in love with the sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay and the single vineyard Semillon. My white wine taste in this region is rather expensive but the good news is that these wines are very tasty and affordable. Quite unique, Aravina has a sports car gallery with vintage items! And if this is not enough there is a restaurant that offers lunch and from what I heard, the chef is amazing.

+ Margaret River wine tasting – Flametree Winery

The cellar door at Flametree is set inside a beach style house which makes this spot very relaxed and cosy. It is possible to enjoy a glass of your favourite wine paired with a platter next to the fire place or on a sunny day outside on the deck. The SRS range stands for Sub Regional Series where only exceptional grapes are used for special vintages. I left with a bottle of the S.R.S. Margaret River Syrah 2016 which has a medium body with savoury notes and a delightful aftertaste.

+ Margaret River wine tasting – Vasse Felix Estate

You could easily spend all afternoon at this winery! Vasse Felix makes outstanding Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines. The Wine Lounge offers wine flights with charcuterie and cheese, heavenly! The upstairs restaurant was awarded two Chefs Hats, which is a top notch Australian award. All the more reason to try out Vasse Felix Estate in the Margaret River wine region.

+ Margaret River wine tasting – Voyager Estate

I’m a huge fan of South African vineyards! The first thing that caught my attention was the Cape Dutch architecture of the Estate which is similar to that in South Africa’s cape region. Inside you have the opportunity to experience a wine flight that starts at $9au. The staff are very knowledgable and help you pick the wine flight that suits you best. I loved the interior of the wine room, classy but homely. Last but certainly not least, Voyager Estate has an award-winning restaurant open daily for lunch, enjoy!

+ Margaret River wine tasting – Marq Wines

This boutique winery has some excellent wines to offer. The tasting room is small, personal and has a deck for a sunny day. This family run business is very passionate about its wines. Mark Warren the winemaker, likes to experiment and this results in delicious blends. My favourite wine? The 2014 Petit Manseng! This rare grape (originated from France) is grown in the North of Margaret River and fermented in oak barrels for 10 months, amazing!

+ Margaret River wine tasting – Leeuwin Estate

As a big Chardonnay lover, this place was like heaven to me. I actually went back to try more of their exquisite 2014 Art Series Chardonnay! Wow, this Chardonnay made my wildest wine dream come true. Every sip gives an explosion of various tastes (nougat, anise and cashews) and it has a silky/smooth aftertaste. This and the 2014 Art Series Shiraz are must tries at Leeuwin Estate!

+ Margaret River wine tasting – Pierro

Did I save the best for last? Together with Leeuwin Estate, Pierro produces the region’s finest Chardonnay. Both estates have won several awards for this continuous superb Chardonnay and all I can add is, it is truly an outstanding wine. The ripe, soft and subtle 2013 Fire Gully Shiraz is another great choice. What I loved about Pierro was the enthusiastic staff, the intimate tasting area, the cute dog and of course the award-winning wines!

Did I miss any great wineries? Let me know! I will be back in Australia soon and as a self-confessed wine lover the chances are high that Margaret River will be the first stop. Cheers!
